Tumours with teeth do exist. It occurs in a rather rare kind of tumour called teratoma. This tumour can develop basically into any kind of body tissue or organ including teeth, hair, bone, muscles, eyes etc. Teratomas most commonly occur in the tailbone (coccyx) of newborns and children, ovaries of females or testicles. But finding it else such as the brain is not uncommon. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.16&#8243; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2>Teratomas and cancer<o:p><\/o:p><\/h2>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_divider divider_weight=&#8221;3px&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.16&#8243; width=&#8221;41%&#8221; custom_margin=&#8221;-17px||||false|false&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][\/et_pb_divider][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.16&#8243; text_font_size=&#8221;16px&#8221; text_line_height=&#8221;2em&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Teratomas can be classified as mature (<strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/medicallib.co.za\/health-info\/frequently-asked-questions-faqs-on-cancer\/\" style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">benign<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/strong>) meaning not cancerous. Such can easily be surgically removed but can grow back after surgical removal. Teratomas in newborn babies and children are mostly benign.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Teratomas can also be classified as immature or precancerous. This means they have the ability to grow into fully mature malignant<strong><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/medicallib.co.za\/health-info\/what-is-cancer\/\" style=\"color: #3366ff;\"> cancer<\/a><\/span><\/strong>. Ovarian teratoma is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancerresearchuk.org\/about-cancer\/ovarian-cancer\/types\/germ-cell\"><strong><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">mostly benign<\/span><\/strong><\/a> for women in their reproductive age (from teens to forties)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">There are <strong><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.longdom.org\/open-access\/mature-and-immature-teratoma-a-review-of-pathological-characteristics-and-treatment-options-2168-9857.1000124.pdf\" style=\"color: #3366ff;\">2 types of testicular teratomas<\/a><\/span><\/strong>: pre and post-purbetal. Germ cells are cells which develop into gametes (eggs or sperms). Besides, germ cells are pluripotent. \u00a0This means they have the ability to differentiate and specialized into any type of body cell. A teratoma results from a complication involving the differentiation and specialization process.\u00a0 Because of the pluripotent nature of the germ cell, an error in the differentiation or specialization process have the capacity to give rise to any cell, tissue or organ type. Hence, fingers, teeth, brain, eyes, bones, muscles etc. find themselves where they are not meant to be.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.longdom.org\/open-access\/mature-and-immature-teratoma-a-review-of-pathological-characteristics-and-treatment-options-2168-9857.1000124.pdf\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Teratomas contain<\/span><\/strong><\/a> well-differentiated or incompletely differentiated elements of at least two germ cells layers (endoderm, ectoderm and\/or mesoderm). Mature teratomas are well differentiated relative to the germ cell layers. Immature teratomas are incompletely differentiated and are similar to foetal or embryonic tissue. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.16&#8243; text_font_size=&#8221;16px&#8221; text_line_height=&#8221;2em&#8221; background_color=&#8221;rgba(236,239,74,0.26)&#8221; custom_padding=&#8221;|10px||10px|false|true&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600; font-size: 30px;\">&#8220;<\/span><\/strong> According to <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dnascience.plos.org\/2013\/06\/13\/two-intriguing-tumors-fibroids-and-teratomas\/%20\" style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>Dr. Ricki Lewis<\/strong><\/a><\/span>, a teratoma typically develops from a wayward sperm or egg that erroneously activated its developmental program only to produce just a tooth or tuft, wrapped in some sort of covering like a California roll. According to her, it can also be a situation whereby a somatic cell escaped from an early embryo that didn\u2019t realize it was no longer a part of the whole. Remnants of a twin might also appear to be a teratoma but isn\u2019t quite the same thing, she added.<span style=\"color: #ff6600; font-size: 30px;\"><strong>&#8220;<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=&#8221;4.16&#8243; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;4_4&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.16&#8243; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.16&#8243; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2>Some Real Life Examples of Teratomas<o:p><\/o:p><\/h2>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_divider color=&#8221;#E02B20&#8243; divider_weight=&#8221;3px&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.16&#8243; background_enable_color=&#8221;off&#8221; width=&#8221;75%&#8221; custom_margin=&#8221;-17px||||false|false&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][\/et_pb_divider][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.16&#8243; text_font_size=&#8221;16px&#8221; text_line_height=&#8221;2em&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">A<strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1002\/bdra.10133%20\" style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> 25\u2010year\u2010old Japanese woman<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0underwent surgery for an ovarian tumor. A solid mass within the tumor was found to contain a head, trunk, Brain, eye, spinal nerve, ear, teeth, thyroid gland, bone, bone marrow, gut, trachea, blood vessels, and phallic cavernous tissue.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">In <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/NEJMicm1308260%20\" style=\"color: #ff0000;\">2014<\/a><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0a 4-months old infant in Maryland had teeth removed from his brain during surgery from a rare brain tumour.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Another <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/id\/28294470\/ns\/health-childrens_health\/t\/tumor-babys-brain-contained-tiny-foot\/#.X15ASxAzaT8\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">3 days old baby<\/span><\/a><\/strong>\u00a0from Colorado Springs was born with microscopic brain tumour.
